Beer In Pictures - Number 6 A Guide to the Wonderful Delights of Thornbridge Brewery

There are breweries you enjoy… and then there are breweries that quietly build a reputation where almost everything they produce is worth your time.

Thornbridge Brewery sits very comfortably in the latter category.

Born out of Derbyshire and now firmly established as one of the UK’s most respected craft brewers, Thornbridge has mastered that delicate balance between tradition and innovation, producing beers that feel both rooted and refreshingly modern.

So, in the spirit of helpfulness (and perhaps a little indecision at the bar), here’s a guide to some of their standout beers, a roadmap through a range that rarely disappoints.

The Light & Refreshing

Wild Swan (3.5%)
A pale, easy-drinking ale that punches well above its weight. Light citrus, gentle bitterness, and endlessly sessionable. Perfect for long afternoons when one pint inevitably becomes two… or three.

Brother Rabbit (4.0%)
Crisp, clean, and golden. This is a straightforward, refreshing ale with a subtle bitterness, ideal for those moments when you want clarity rather than complexity.

The Balanced Bitters

Lord Marples (4.0%)
A classic English bitter done properly. Smooth, malty, and comforting with a gentle floral hop character. This is the kind of pint that reminds you why bitters endure.

Hopton (4.3%)
A slightly more modern take, with a bright hop profile balanced by a solid malt backbone. There’s a freshness here that makes it feel lively without being overpowering.

The Hop-Forward Standouts

Jaipur (5.9%)
The flagship, and for many, the benchmark. Jaipur is a beautifully constructed IPA: grapefruit, lemon zest, and a clean, dry finish. Bold but balanced, and still one of the most reliable pints you’ll find anywhere.

Kipling (5.2%)
A softer, more aromatic pale ale with tropical fruit notes and a smooth, rounded body. Less aggressive than Jaipur, but no less satisfying.

The Richer, Darker Side

Black Harry (3.9%)
Dark, smooth, and quietly complex. Roasted malt, hints of chocolate, and a refreshing finish that keeps it from becoming heavy.

Saint Petersburg (7.4%)
A full-bodied imperial stout with real depth, coffee, dark chocolate, and a warming richness. This is one to savour slowly.

Something a Little Different

Sequoia (4.5%)
An American-style amber ale that bridges the gap between malt sweetness and hop bitterness. Balanced, slightly resinous, and full of character.

Final Thoughts

What makes Thornbridge so consistently impressive is not just the quality of individual beers, but the range itself.

There’s something here for every mood:

  • A light session ale for a sunny afternoon
  • A classic bitter for quiet comfort
  • A bold IPA when you want something with bite
  • A dark, contemplative stout for slower evenings

It’s the kind of lineup that makes choosing difficult, but in the best possible way.

So if you find yourself at the bar, staring at a row of Thornbridge pumps and hesitating…

Don’t overthink it. Start anywhere.

Wychwood Dirty Tackle: Witney Brewing with a Playful Edge

Some breweries build their reputation on tradition, others on innovation. Wychwood Brewery has managed to do both, rooting itself in centuries of local brewing while embracing imagination, storytelling, and a distinctly modern sense of identity. Tucked away behind the main street of Witney , in the heart of the Cotswolds , Wychwood is a brewery that understands the importance of place and how to bring it to life. Witney: Bread, Blankets, and Beer Witney has long been associated with its 'three Bs,'  bread, blankets, and beer . For centuries, the town thrived as a centre of blanket-making, powered by the River Windrush, while brewing developed alongside it as an essential part of daily life. Beer here was not simply a luxury, it was woven into the fabric of the town. Inns, taverns, and small breweries served both locals and travellers passing through the Cotswolds, establishing a tradition that continues to this day. Wychwood Brewery stands firmly within that lineage, car...

A Revival in a Glass: Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild

Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild is a rare and fascinating example of a strong mild ale , weighing in at a robust 6.0% ABV and brewed to a pre–World War I recipe . Before the Great War, strong milds were not unusual; they were the norm. In fact, mild ales were traditionally brewed in four strengths , ranging from around 5.5% to 7% ABV , often обозначated by 'X' markings, with ' XXXX' representing the strongest. However, wartime grain shortages forced brewers to adapt, and weaker milds gradually replaced their stronger counterparts. What we drink today as 'mild' is often a shadow of that earlier, more powerful tradition, making Dark Ruby something of a historical survivor. Black Country Heritage: Sarah Hughes Brewery and Its Sedgley Home Sarah Hughes Brewery is a historic, family-run brewery based in the village of Sedgley , in the heart of the Black Country . Brewing takes place behind the renowned The Beacon Hotel , a traditional pub that has become somethin...
