About the Author
Before the tasting notes, before the brewery visits, before the deep dives into hops, heritage, and regional styles, Debs' relationship with real ale began where it should, behind the bar.
Debs spent years working in hospitality, learning the culture of beer not from textbooks, but from hand pulls, cellar checks, and conversations across the bar top. Her experience spans everything from high-pressure match days and large-scale events to intimate, community-focused venues where beer isn’t just served, it’s discussed, debated, and appreciated.
Most recently, Debs worked as a bartender at a specialist microbar and bottle shop, where real ale and craft beer weren’t just products, but the foundation of the entire business. There, she developed a deeper knowledge of styles, brewing techniques, and flavour profiles, while helping customers navigate an ever-growing and sometimes overwhelming beer landscape. Recommending the right pint, whether a traditional bitter, a complex stout, or something more experimental, became both a skill and a pleasure. Just as importantly, she learned how much beer is about people, their tastes, their stories, and the shared experience of discovery.
Earlier in my career, Debs worked in fast-paced hospitality environments, including large sporting venues and events such as weddings, where efficiency, teamwork, and consistency were essential. Those experiences taught her how to deliver quality under pressure, maintain high standards of service, and stay adaptable in constantly changing environments. They also grounded her understanding of what good beer service looks like in practice, clean lines, well-kept casks, and the importance of presentation.
Alongside this, Debs gained experience in community-focused venues that combined bar service with wider cultural and social engagement. Working in spaces that brought together beer, art, and local initiatives gave her a broader perspective on what pubs and bars can be, not just places to drink, but places that foster inclusion, creativity, and connection.
Across all of these roles, one thing remained constant, a commitment to creating welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuine experiences for customers. Whether it’s guiding someone toward a new favourite ale or simply pouring a well-kept pint, Debs always believed that good service and good beer go hand in hand.
This blog grew directly out of that experience. It’s shaped by practical knowledge, curiosity, and a genuine passion for real ale, its traditions, its innovations, and the communities that keep it alive. Here, you’ll find not just reviews, but reflections on beer culture, brewing, and the places and people that make the real ale scene what it is.
Because at its heart, real ale isn’t just something you drink. It’s something you learn, share, and come back to, again and again.
